Device Drivers

Device drivers create an interface between a physical or abstract device and an operating system. DTSE is familiar with Solaris (Unix) and Linux device driver development.

In both Unix and Linux, there are three kinds of devices: block, network, and character. Block devices are typically disks, and the driver interface involves a file system. Character devices are everything else, with the exception of network devices, which implement their own set of entry points supporting packet transmission and reception.

Generally, hardware vendors author drivers for the devices they sell. Other driver development is done to employ hardware in a an environment the vendor does not support or to provide special features for a particular system.
